Hail Hurts Crops On Monday afternoon, following a. gentle shower that had fallen earlier, farmers near Zebulon were much concerned to note heavy, dark clouds that presaged wind and had. However, there was no hard wind and only rain to fall. Other sections fared badly. On Tuesday morning J. E. Carter en tered the Record office bringing tobacco and squash leaves that had been ruined by hail. They cam° bom his farm in the lower edge of Wake county, but be said the hail extended into Johnston county, doing conside able damage. An other streak extended north of Zebulon, hunting crons on the Dr. Fowler farms and those adjacent. Mr. Carter advises that farmers take out hail insu ance, ruefully admitting that he had none yes terday. On Tuesday D. D. Chamblee found himself fairly swamped with applications for hail insurance. Atlantic Christian College Wins Honor Through Paper At the annual spring convention of the N. C. Collegiate Press As sociation The Collegiate, newspap er published by Atlantic Christian College, won second place in its class, that for papers of schools with enrollment less than 1,000. The Collegiate surpassed only bv The Davidsonian of Davidson Col lege, rating “fair in treatment, news stories, and features; good in balance, vitality, originality, copy reading, headlines, typography, front page make-up, inside make up, editorial column, editorial fea tures, and sports; excellent in cov erage and superior in printing.” This paper takes special pride in this award of merit, since The Col legiate is printed in the Record shop. The office force has enjoyed working with the student editors and manager in preparation for printing their paper. BRADLEYS CALLED TO FAIRMONT Rev. J. W. Bradley and Mrs. Bradley were called to Fairmont Wednesday because of the sudden death of Mrs. Bradley’s brother-in law, J. E. Blalock. Funeral services were set for Thursday. CLUB COLUMN GARDEN CLUB The last meeting of the Garden Club for this year was held as a picnic on ‘ The Rocks” on Tuesday afternoon of this week. Mrs. C. E. Flowers, retiring president, briefly reviewed the work of the club since its organization as a part of the state federation, and presented the new president, Mrs. F. D. Finch. After a short talk outlining the plans made for next year, Mrs. Finch presented in be half of the club a gift to Mrs. I Flowers in token of appreciation 1 for her faithful service as leader. Mrs. Theo. Davis discussed Plants and Flowers of the Bible wdth special reference to those known to modern gardeners. A picnic supper was enjoyed, bringing to a close a successful year’s work. Officers of the Wo man's Club were guests. Zebulon Baseball Club Organized The Zebulon Baseball CN b, 1 ponsored by the Rotary Club, was organized last week with Eugene Jones as business manager; A. V. Med’in, president; and R. V. Brown as secretary - treasu;cr. The above officers with R. H. Bridgers constitute the board of directors. The Zebulon team is a member of the Tobacco State League and will play the opening game June 3rd in the Wakelon ball park which is now being repaired and put into first class condition. A new fence and other repairs are being made. The present list of players who 1 have been signed up by Manager | Jones include: Harold Bissett of | the University of North Carolina j at first. William Hoyle of State at | second, Richa. d Hoyle of Wake j Forest at short, Grubb of Carolina lat third, Jimmie Page of Georgia | Tech behind the bat and Bill j Griffin, captain of State, Frederic I Hoyle of Wake Forest and Leroy Spill of Elon in the outfield. The pitching staff for this year, which has not as yet been com pleted. will include Allen G.een of State, Ted Pippin of Oak Ridge, a pitcher from Catawba and Irby Wright from the University of North Carolina, who will also as sist in coaching the pitchers. The club made ari excellent showing last year and expect to do even better this year. Manager Jones, along with the Rotary club, asks that all of the local fans I who can, lend their assistance to the boys this year and help them win the pennant in the league. i Southern Baptists The Southern Baptist Conven tion, in session the past week at Richmond, Va., elected Dr. L. R. Scarborough of Texas as president of the convention. The convention named a commission to confer with Secretary of State Hull about recovering from Japan compensa tion for missionary property de stroyed in China. On the eve of the convention a handsome dia mond brooch was presented to Mrs. W. N. Jones of Raleigh for her outstanding leadership in wo men's work. The convention next year will meet in Oklahoma City. NUMBER 47 Campbell College Celebrates 51st • Commencement Campbell College will celebrate its fifty-first commencement June 2nd with Editor Santl'ord Martin of the Winston Salem Journal de livering the commencement address and Dr. Sankey L. Blanton, First Baptist pastor, Wilmington, preach ing the sermon May 29. Students from Wake county in the graduating class are Mary Iva Gay and Ralph House, Lyda Mae Faison, and Gladys Yancey, Zebu lon, Annie Laurie Britt, Garner, and Harvey B. Jones, Holly 1 Springs. Mary Iva Gay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Gay, has taken an active part in public speaking and i dramatics this year, and is a mem ber of the Sappho literary society. ! Ralph House, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. House, has been a var sity debater and head cheerio this year. He is president of the Wake county club, and a member of the Phi literary society. Annie Laurie Britt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Britt, and a Home Economics major, was one of the May Queen’s attendants. Harvey B. Jones, son of Mr. and M s. J. F. Jones, is a member of the Engineers’ club here. Lyda Mae Faison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Faison, and Gladys Yancey, daughter of Mr. nnd Mrs George Yancey, both in the c( ,ni( rcial graduating class, are members of the Sappho litera l ry society. Reynolds To Speak At Corinth - Holder Commencement The Senior Class of Corinth- Holder High School are very for tunate in having to deliver their Commencement Address, Friday afternoon, May 27 at 5:00, Senator Robert R. Reynolds. They urge j each of you to be present as they are certain he, as well as they, will have something interesting for you. week it was stated that i Supt. H. B. Morrow would deliver jthe address but he secured Senator j Reynolds to speak instead. Ball Game Friday; Fats Ys. Leans Mrs. Hunter Bell announces a ball game on Friday at 5:00 p. m. at the school diamond, admission to be 10c and 20c. Fat men will endeavor by weight of person and personality to overcome the skillful slimness of lean opponents. Among the players are J. E. Melntire, R. H. Bridgers, R. V. Brown, F. D. Finch, Willard Gill, and others equally efficient. Pro ceeds will be used for equipment of the playground. A large at tendance is desired. The playground is open every morning in the week except Wed nesday, and all afternoons except Saturday. Children of any age are welcomed. Mrs. Belle Gibbs Simmons, wife of former Senator F. M. Simmons, died at Morehead City Hospital on Saturday of last week and was buried on Sunday from Christ Episcopal Church, New Bern.
